WE GOT DA’ BUNK ON THE BUNK

HOT ROCKS AND COLD SPOTS

One of the most difficult aspects of being a ghost hunter is flying in the face of convention.  Ideas that were once considered to be little more than theory, eventually became a part of our vocabulary.  A generation or two later, mostly through book sales, these selfsame theories about the paranormal evolved into “truth”.

Unfortunately, even a modest practitioner of ghost-craft eventually compares their own data to that of the “professionals”.  Sometimes, that data corroborates these age old theories.  Other times, this data disputes what almost everyone else in the field considers to be valid.

Let’s start off with the idea of the cold spot.

If you ask any TV-trained ghost hunter about cold spots, most will parrot the definition given during last week’s top episode.

“A cold spot,”  They will say, “is the result of ghosts gathering energy in the form of warmth from the air.  This energy, in turn, is used in an effort to manifest themselves.”

Were I a script supervisor, I would be very proud of my monkey.  Unfortunately, We’re just paranormal investigators, and one day we decided to take a look at our own data.  What we found was quite different from what the rule book dictated.

Let’s start with the most basic idea.  Ghosts “gather” warmth from the air in order to manifest themselves.  The word “gather” implies consciousness, does it not?  “Gathering” is an action of an intelligent entity.  The cold spot theory never claims that these cold spots are happenstance.  They are the result of an intelligent, conscious entity actively attempting to manifest itself.

What’s wrong with that?

A lot of things.

According to our own observations, our most compelling investigations occurred either in the late fall or the dead of winter.  If you’re an active hunter, check your own records.  We would be willing to bet that your own “personal best” investigations occurred when there was very little warmth in the air to speak of.  Oddly, this is when most of these intelligent and active “gatherers” choose to declare themselves.  Not in the dog days of summer, when the air is teeming with free warmth, but during the coldest days of the year.

Let’s take that a step further.  When do most haunts occur?

Once again, according to the “old guard” of ghost hunting, while an apparition can manifest at any time of the day, most interactions with the living seem to occur between midnight and dawn.  Again, not the warmest times of the day, but the coldest.  It would seem odd that entities intelligent enough to “gather energy from thin air” would keep missing an obvious planetary window
known as “High Noon”.

So, why the cold?

No idea.  But, of course, we have a theory

Ghost Head Soup is in the process of conducting experiments in which we “Engineer the Environment” (remember that phrase).  Basically, we are incorporating any anomalies that have been traditionally associated with a classic haunting into what can only be described as a predetermined event horizon.  An environment specifically designed for “their” survival.

To that effect, we’re incorporating any and all parameters that have ever been associated with a classic haunt. If a drop in temperature has been documented in the majority of classic haunts, we’ll then acclimate the environment to better suit the entity’s requirements.  If the planetary lore suggests that certain levels of ambient energy be provided, EMF pumps, Van DeGraaf generators and Free Wave emitters are stationed.  Even “Trauma Event Fossiling” (currently simulated) and “Group Thought” will be incorporated.

Why are we doing this?  Simply put, the theories we’ve all been raised on haven’t taught us anything.  While we’ve attempted to “follow the rules” of traditional ghost hunting, we haven’t made any substantial progress.  In fact, by following the rules, the field hasn’t made any progress in over ninety years. By contrast, the most unorthodox methods and the oddest of experiments have resulted in data and personal experiences that can only be described as extreme.

Ghost hunters wanted:  Followers need not apply.
